According to Ing. Dr. Clifford Braimah, Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Accra’s population has surpassed the water company’s capacity.

Many Accra residents, particularly those in Adenta, Kasoa, Weija, and Apaapa in La, have expressed worry about how their villages are being impacted by the erratic water supply.

According to the inhabitants, this condition has made it difficult for them to go about their daily lives and has forced some of them to pay outrageous sums for water that tankers deliver.

Residents have complained that the Ghana Water Company Limited neglected to inform them of their plans for short-term water supply cuts in certain villages; others have reported going without water for almost a full year.

On Monday, January 22, Ing. Braimah addressed the problem of uneven water supply and stated that the GWCL needed to modernize its equipment to keep up with the growing demands of Accra’s citizens.

“Already in Accra, the volume of water we produce, the population has outgrown it, and we are looking at putting up a new system at Kpone to boost our production but resource constraint has been the problem, Since 2017, 2018, we have been working and we have not settled on finances.

“So already if you have a limited volume of water coming into the system, and your population is big, you have to block them and supply them according to the demands of the people but you cannot give everybody [water] at the same times otherwise some will not get. And so we have been limited for a very long time.”

On the other hand, Ing. Braimah conceded that certain grievances were associated with specific issues that might be immediately resolved upon notification to the closest GWCL office.
