The Nii Korle Kulo Family of Asere Dzorshie and the Nii Ayikwei Sewuhu Family of Ahumka Atukpai have announced the death of retired Inspector General of Police, Mr Paul Tawiah Quaye, who passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at the 37 Military Hospital after a long illness.
From 2009 until 2013, Mr. Quaye was Ghana’s Inspector General of Police. He advanced through the ranks to hold the top position in the Ghana Police Service, where his leadership had a lasting impact on national security and law enforcement, according to the families.
During his tenure, the retiring IGP made major efforts to modernise the police force and bolster internal security architecture. He was widely considered a disciplinarian and a nationalist.
Under the leadership of the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills, he was appointed to the highest police position, and he served under President John Dramani Mahama until his retirement.
According to the families’ statement, Mr. Quaye is remembered for his unwavering dignity, integrity, and commitment to the country.
“His lifelong commitment to service and humanity remains a cherished legacy,” according to the press release.
The declaration was signed by Mr. James Nii Korle Osabu Quaye, the head of the Nii Korle Kulo and Nii Ayikwei Sewuhu households.
They said that plans for burial ceremonies and funeral rites are presently being finalised, and that the public would soon be informed of the timetable of events.
While navigating what they described as a challenging time of bereavement, the families have politely asked for prayers and support from the public while also requesting privacy.
One of Ghana’s most well-known police heads of the Fourth Republic, Mr. Quaye, passed away.
He was a well-respected figure in national security circles long after he retired, and his time as IGP coincided with a time of major political change and security sector changes.
