The late Ambassador James Victor Gbeho, a renowned statesman whose decades of service included both domestic and international diplomacy, will have a state funeral, according to plans revealed by the Ghanaian government.
The funeral is planned for tomorrow, Friday, July 31, 2026, at the forecourt of the State House. It is being organised in cooperation with the Gbeho and related families.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP, Minister of State for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, made the statement and referred to the late ambassador as “one of Ghana’s most distinguished statesmen.”
Over the course of his public service, Ambassador Gbeho developed a distinguished career in Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, moving up the ranks steadily.
Throughout his career, he held the positions of Chief Director, Deputy Minister, and finally Minister for Foreign Affairs, all of which had a significant impact on the development of the nation’s foreign policy.
His impact was felt well beyond Ghana’s boundaries. As the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative in Somalia, Ambassador Gbeho supported regional peace and stability initiatives.
Later on, he became the president of the ECOWAS Commission, solidifying his reputation as an advocate of diplomacy and regional cooperation throughout West Africa.
The Ghanaian government expressed its sincere sympathies to the Gbeho family in the statement, recognising the significant loss experienced by both his loved ones and the country at large.
