The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening defence and security cooperation with Ghana, with a focus on military training, intelligence sharing, technology, cyber security and regional stability.
The British High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Dr Christian Rogg, made the commitment when he paid a courtesy visit to the Minister for Defence, Hon Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, at the Ministry of Defence. He was accompanied by the UK Defence Attaché to Ghana, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Wood.
Welcoming the British High Commissioner on behalf of the Government of Ghana, Defence Minister Kenneth Adjei expressed appreciation to Dr Rogg for his congratulatory message following his appointment to the Ministry.
The Minister said Ghana and the UK have maintained a longstanding bilateral relationship based on shared commitments to peace, security and international cooperation. He also commended the UK for its continued assistance in strengthening Ghana’s national security capabilities.
According to Hon Adjei, UK support to Ghana has covered several important areas, including military training, specialised defence courses, maritime security, technological expertise and counter-terrorism cooperation under the Accra Initiative.
He also highlighted the provision of ambulances to communities in Northern Ghana as part of the broader areas of support between the two countries.
The Defence Minister noted that the cooperation has contributed to enhancing the capabilities of Ghana’s security institutions and supporting the country’s contribution to United Nations peacekeeping operations.
Ghana Seeks Greater Cooperation in Defence Technology and Cyber Security
Hon Kenneth Adjei called for stronger collaboration between Ghana and the UK in four key areas: industrial participation, logistics, technology transfer and cyber defence.
He explained that deeper cooperation in these areas would help Ghana improve its capacity to respond to emerging security threats and strengthen the country’s defence infrastructure.
Responding to the call, Dr Christian Rogg reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to the existing Ghana-UK defence partnership and expressed his desire to see bilateral security cooperation expanded.
The British High Commissioner said UK assistance was increasingly focused on helping Ghana respond to evolving security challenges through military training, intelligence sharing and technological development.
He further assured the Defence Minister that the UK was prepared to support Ghana in addressing security threats in the Sahel and Gulf of Guinea, regions that continue to have significant implications for peace and stability in West Africa.
UK and Ghana Strengthen Border Security Cooperation
Dr Rogg disclosed that the UK is working closely with the Ghana Armed Forces and Ghana Immigration Service in Accra and Tamale on border security initiatives.
He said the UK was interested in identifying additional areas where enhanced cooperation could deliver mutual benefits for both countries.
The British High Commissioner also expressed the UK’s willingness to expand collaboration in areas including riverine operations, special operations and cyber security.
He acknowledged that cyber security remains an area where Ghana and the UK could further strengthen cooperation, particularly as digital threats continue to evolve.
Ghana Invited to UK Bilateral Security Dialogue
Dr Christian Rogg also wished the Ghanaian team well ahead of its participation in the Exercise Cambrian Patrol competition, an international military exercise that brings together teams from different countries.
He subsequently invited Defence Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei to participate in the UK Bilateral Security Dialogue, scheduled to take place in London in November 2026.
According to Dr Rogg, Ghana’s participation in the dialogue would be important in advancing the longstanding bilateral defence and security relationship between Ghana and the United Kingdom.
The latest engagement highlights the continued importance of Ghana-UK security cooperation, particularly in areas such as counter-terrorism, border security, maritime security, cyber defence, military training and intelligence sharing.
