Akufo-Addo consoles the Rawlings family on Nana Konadu’s death

The family of the late Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has received condolences from former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Following a brief illness, Mrs. Rawlings passed away in the Ridge Hospital in Accra on October 23, 2025.

Former President Akufo-Addo paid tribute to the former First Lady in a Facebook post.

“My wife Rebecca and I are deeply saddened by the news of the untimely passing of the wife of the late first President of the 4th Republic, His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings, the longest serving First Lady in our history and the Founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, H.E. Mrs Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings,” the former President posted.

“As a role model for women in Ghana and across Africa, Mrs. Rawlings’ gender advocacy and women empowerment initiatives remain impactful to this day. Her commitment to the growth of the women’s movement in Ghana and Africa can never be forgotten. She was a warm and affectionate woman, with a good sense of humour and was excellent company. Rebecca, my children and I, extend our deepest condolences to her children and family on this sad occasion.”

“May her soul rest peacefully in the bosom of the Almighty, until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall meet again,” Nana Addo stated.

In the meantime, after the death of their beloved, the family of the late Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has asked for solitude in order to grieve.

During a brief news conference held at the late Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings’ home in Ridge, Accra, Oheneba Akwasi Abeyie, the head of the family, stated that the president would make additional announcements on the burial of Ghana’s first female presidential candidate.

In light of the death of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings’ wife, he added, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has also been notified.

After informing His Excellency the President, the family next notified Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene.

A notification verifying Nana Konadu’s passing has been issued by His Excellency the President.

“At this stage, the family is obviously in mourning and we will crave your indulgence to give us some privacy. All further notices will be relayed by the government,” the head of the family said.
