NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia has described the ongoing disagreement between Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi as part of a much broader historical struggle over the control and management of Ghana’s natural resources.
According to Asiedu Nketia, the controversy surrounding GoldBod and Ghana’s gold sector is not an isolated or recent development. He argued that attempts to challenge Ghana’s efforts to gain greater control over its mineral wealth can be traced back several decades to the administration of the country’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
The NDC chairman suggested that the current debate over GoldBod reflects a longstanding national discussion about resource ownership, mineral wealth and Ghana’s economic independence.
He claimed that individuals and interest groups had previously been mobilised to undermine Nkrumah’s vision of transforming Ghana into a major resource and industrial hub.
Asiedu Nketia’s comments come amid heightened public attention surrounding the GoldBod controversy, with the exchange between Sammy Gyamfi and Afenyo-Markin generating significant political debate over Ghana’s gold industry and the government’s approach to managing the country’s mineral resources.
