New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has criticised the demolition of La Pleasure Beach, describing the popular Accra beach facility as an important social, economic, cultural and international asset for Ghana.
In a statement issued on Saturday, October 3, 2026, Dr Bawumia said La Beach had developed into one of Ghana’s leading beach tourism destinations and provided livelihoods for thousands of people, especially young people involved in businesses around the area.
According to the former Vice President, La Pleasure Beach had also hosted several international events and social functions, while playing an important role in activities associated with the Year of Return under the previous NPP administration.
Dr Bawumia expressed concern over the demolition, particularly the destruction of movable properties that he said could have been removed by their owners.
He described the development as a setback for the businesses and individuals who depend on the La Beach economy for their livelihoods.
Bawumia promises to transform La Beach into tourism hub
Dr Bawumia said he remains committed to developing La Beach into a major tourism and economic enclave and pledged to support businesses and residents whose livelihoods are linked to the area.
He outlined a five-point approach he said would guide efforts to rebuild and transform the beach economy.
The first measure involves rebuilding the La Beach business ecosystem and providing leases to individual businesses operating in the area.
He also proposed redesigning the beach space to meet appropriate development and safety standards while supporting existing operators to improve and expand their businesses.
Support for Labadi Beach Hotel and local businesses
Dr Bawumia further said the redevelopment plan would protect the space used by Labadi Beach Hotel and other major establishments while allowing them to operate alongside smaller businesses that form part of the broader beach tourism ecosystem.
He said the objective would be to create an environment where major tourism facilities and small businesses can coexist and contribute to the local economy.
Bawumia promises action on Laboma Beach and lagoon
On Laboma Beach, Dr Bawumia said he would engage the owners to address outstanding challenges, support the establishment of their business operations and ensure that all activities comply with Ghanaian laws.
He also pledged to tackle environmental problems affecting the area, including lagoon-related flooding and other environmental concerns.
Dr Bawumia said the proposed interventions would focus on protecting employment and improving the economic opportunities available to people whose livelihoods depend on Ghana’s beach tourism industry.
The NPP flagbearer reiterated his commitment to protecting and expanding the thousands of jobs supported by the La Beach economy, while transforming the area into a stronger tourism and business destination.
