Kennedy Agyapong, a presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), claims that Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team tried to pay him to accept the role of running mate, an offer he claims to have rejected.
The Assin North MP also charged Dr. Bawumia with indulging in actions that would jeopardize the party’s cohesion in remarks made at Jubilee Park in Kumasi, Ashanti region, after a march organized by his followers.
The Vice President and his crew are allegedly intimidating party members who do not support the NPP flagbearer candidate, the candidate for that position emphasized.
A sizable crowd of Mr. Agyapong’s supporters, including many inhabitants of the Ashanti area, assembled to march in support of the prospective NPP flagbearer.
Many participants stated that they supported the Member of Parliament for Assin Central because of their worries about the nation’s current economic crisis.
These people, who were mainly NPP supporters, expressed the opinion that Mr. Kennedy Agyapong is the candidate most qualified to support the party in winning the future general elections in 2024.
The Vice President’s campaign team refuted the claim, though, in a brief statement.
The Vice President’s campaign team stated “in unequivocal terms that the Bawumia Campaign team has not approached Kennedy Agyapong for such a running mate offer, nor have we assigned any member of the team to approach him for the same” in a statement signed by Spokesperson Gideon Boako and dated Saturday, September 30, 2023.
“It is also not true, as alleged by Kennedy Agyapong that Dr. Bawumia is collapsing the party through intimidation”, the statement said, adding: “The unity of our party has been of great concern to candidate Dr. Bawumia”.
“It is in light of such concern that he refrains from responding to unwarranted attacks by others in the contest and has cautioned his supporters against responding to such provocative attacks. His strategy has been to persuade delegates to support his bid. This, he does, by laying his vision for the party and country”, the team noted.
It said: “As we have always maintained, the contest for flagbearer in the NPP is an internal one, and all actors, particularly the aspirants must be guided by the core values of the NPP, which include but are not limited to truth, decorum, and respect for one another”.
