GHC237 million has been given to cocoa farmers for 50,000 metric tonnes of cocoa, according to Jerome Kwaku Sam, Head of Public Affairs of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).

The announcement comes as Ghana’s cocoa industry is in crisis, with farmers complaining of months-long payment delays.

On Wednesday, February 18, Mr. Sam posted on Facebook, saying, “I’m happy to report COCOBOD has started payment of the 50,000 metric tonnes.” There has been payment of GHC237 million.

A reduction in the producer price for the remaining 2025–2026 crop season is one of the recent reforms implemented by the government.

A revised pricing of GH¢41,392 per tonne (GH¢2,587 per bag) has been implemented.

According to officials, the change is meant to protect farmers from declining cocoa prices worldwide.

In the meantime, COCOBOD has disclosed that it might save an estimated GH₵5 million each month as a result of executive management and senior staff compensation cutbacks.

The reductions, which are 10% for senior employees and 20% for executive management, went into effect right once and will last the remainder of the 2025–2026 crop year.

The decision, which was made public in a press release on Monday, February 16, 2026, is one of several steps being taken to alleviate the cocoa industry’s liquidity issues.
