In 2015, I reported the story of Veracity Elorm Oteng, a 23-year-old domestic help who was found dead in a swimming pool in the gated residence of her employer.
The house was protected by police and private security men, and there was no evidence of intrusion by an outsider.
The police and private security said they had seen Elorm at about 8 a.m. that morning and found her drowned in the pool two hours later. Her dress and slippers were by the pool, indicating she undressed and went swimming. But some things did not add up.
First, the lady had never been seen swimming in the pool when she started working there.
Second, when the police arrived, her body was already floating. And it was impossible to drown and begin to float in two hours.
Third, the autopsy conducted on the body on September 16, 2015, by Dr. L. Edusei of the Police Hospital in Accra gave the cause of death as “blunt head injury” and “right subdural haematoma.”
The private security man, who was taken into police custody, collapsed. When he regained consciousness, he changed his testimony. He said he had not seen the lady on the morning before her body was discovered, but the police on duty had told him to stick to that account because “dead people don’t talk.”
The police were dragging their feet on the investigation and lawyers for the deceased family, Fidelity Law, had petitioned the IGP at the time I did the report.
One weakness on my part was that I did not follow the story to the end, but I have since been wondering who killed the lady in that fortified compound and what the reason might have been. The owner of the house, who was out of Ghana with his family at the time of the death, complained about the slow pace of the investigation and the fact that the police involved had not been arrested.
Elorm may not have gotten justice, except to say that the man in whose house she worked, Ato Essien, is currently serving a jail term for financial malfeasance that resulted in the collapse of his bank.
I hope and pray that Lois Abena Koranteng will get justice if anybody was involved in her death.
