The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South is facing opposition from some NPP (New Patriotic Party) members in the Ashanti Region.

Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo in political circles and the Minister for Energy, has come under fire for recent remarks he made at Kumawu, where he claimed that the Ashanti Region’s residents don’t actually need development and are content with party swag like party T-shirts.

Napo has allowed his inexperience to lead him, and he must learn to act maturely both in words and actions, especially any time he mounts political platforms, the leader of the newly formed NPP Group, Kwabena Opoku Agyemang, said in a speech delivered under the banner of “NPP Activists for Development,” which will soon be out-doored in the Ashanti Region.

Someone of his status and caliber should not speak in such a manner. We believed that this person was well-positioned to run for vice president in the near future, but it is terrible and inappropriate for him to publicly disparage your people in the guise of politics. We strongly reject such anti-party remarks.

“The NPP has a reputation for progress, and this is clear to see everywhere. Napo chose to speak so naively, and we are very disappointed in him. We expected Napo to have campaigned about the significant developments and transformational changes our party has brought to the Ashanti Region during both President Kufuor’s eight-year regime and the current regime under President Akufo-Addo. They questioned how he could govern the Ashanti Region with such anti-party remarks and mindset.

Remember that Napo was last weekend captured in a viral video addressing party supporters on a campaign platform in Kumawu in the lead-up to the bye-elections. He told them not to worry about development and that all they needed was party gear, especially the NPP party’s T-shirts, because the Ashanti Region is a stronghold of the NPP and they would continue to vote for the NPP.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh made the stunning claim that the party will win the bye-election in Kumawu and subsequent ones using simply party T-Shirts without campaigning for votes, which was an interesting twist to the events building up to the recently concluded bye-election in Kumawu.

Our NPP T-Shirts are lovely, and I don’t think anyone will be wearing them and voting for another party, he said. “If we cannot organize campaign rallies, let’s use our money to print T-Shirts and distribute to our party faithful and everyone,” he said.

The Kumawu bye-election was required as a result of the passing of the district’s MP, the late Philip Attah Bassoah, leaving the seat open.

The NPP retained the seat after its candidate won decisively in a landslide victory at the polls, defeating the NDC, which waged a fierce campaign against it over the preceding few weeks.
