Ghana needs to invest more in its defense systems and come up with creative ways to provide the Ghana Armed Forces with the resources they need to carry out their tasks, according to Minister-designate for Defense Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah.

In order to defend the country’s territorial sovereignty, the candidate pledged to assist the Ghana Armed Forces (ABD) in completing all Forward Operating Bases (FOBs).

During his Tuesday appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Dr. Omane Boamah provided the assurance.

Regarding protecting soldiers’ health, the nominee stated that the Ministry would collaborate with the Ministry of Health to address PTSD in veterans and soldiers.

He stated that, with his consent, the GAF will be strengthened with a focus on soldier welfare and military modernization. He also promised to support the development of appropriate housing for the soldiers.

In response to a question concerning steps to safeguard the nation’s cyberspace, the nominee stated that the Ministry will work with other government organizations to identify and stop cyberattacks on the internet infrastructure.

He declared, “We’ll find innovative ways to procure new equipment for the Armed Forces to operate efficiently,”

In response to claims that certain regions were treated unfairly when recruiting for the military, Dr. Omane Boamah emphasized the importance of adhering to equity principles in hiring in order to maintain regional balance.

“If you’re enlisted into the Military Academy, you’re told to “abandon all hopes of normal life,” he added in reference to those who were supposedly enlisted despite not being qualified.

“You’ll jeopardise your life if you don’t qualify to be recruited into the Military Academy.”

Regarding the deployment of soldiers for illicit mining operations, the Minister-designate stated that while the military could assist domestic operations, it could give the impression that the police were unable to manage domestic issues if they were pushed aside to allow soldiers to take charge of specific internal operations.

“The police and the soldier must work collaboratively to combat illegal mining.”

“We’ll give a new face to the fight against illegal small-scale mining by providing alternative livelihoods, reclamation of mined out areas and deployment of drones,” he reiterated.
