Ernest Frimpong, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Amenfi East, is presently under arrest by the police due to remarks he made recently that incited miners to attack security personnel.
The NPP parliamentary candidate has under criticism for remarks he made at a forum with people he thought to be illegal miners. It is said that he advised them to fight off military soldiers who say they are policing the region and trying to evict them by force.
The Tarkwa Police apprehended Ernest Frimpong on Wednesday night. In his statement, he refuted the accusations, claiming that he never supported illicit mining or incited miners to confront military officers.
In an earlier statement, he responded to the purported words he had made. He emphasised that his intentions had been distorted and claimed that his remarks had been taken out of context during a two-hour discussion with artisanal small-scale miners.
The Chairman of the Municipal Security Council and MCE for Amenfi East, Frederick Korankye, confirmed the arrest to Joy FM and stated, “He is seeking bail, he went there with a lawyer to grant him a police inquiry bail in the meantime and then maybe he will be reporting himself the next day.”
The MCE pointed out that Mr. Frimpong wasn’t in the area when the police invited him a few days prior.
“The meeting happened about two months ago and we were not aware,” the MCE claims. The video’s substance was unknown to security until it suddenly surfaced.
I believe we viewed the video over the weekend, so that’s when it appeared. On Monday, he was thus invited.
After they called him on Monday, he reported himself to the police yesterday.
The calls for attacks on soldiers have already prompted a strong warning from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), underscoring the serious danger that such acts represent to the security and stability of the country.
