Fela Kuti’s iconic “Zombie” album, one of the most influential records in African music history, is being commemorated with a new 50th anniversary edition featuring redesigned artwork, limited-edition vinyl and new apparel.

Originally released as a powerful critique of the Nigerian government and military, “Zombie” became one of Fela Kuti’s most politically charged Afrobeat projects. The album’s title track famously used the term “zombie” to criticise the unquestioning obedience of Nigerian soldiers.

For the anniversary edition, American designer Tremaine Emory, founder of Denim Tears, has created new packaging that pays tribute to the original artwork designed by renowned Nigerian artist Lemi Ghariokwu.

The redesigned package also incorporates photographs of the New Afrika Shrine captured by Nigerian photographer Bolaji Alonge.

Only 1,000 Fela Kuti ‘Zombie’ Vinyl Copies Available

The special anniversary release is scheduled for October 9 and will be issued as a limited-edition vinyl pressing.

Only 1,000 copies of the Fela Kuti “Zombie” 50th anniversary vinyl are being produced, making the release a potentially significant collector’s item for fans of Afrobeat, African music and Fela Kuti’s musical legacy.

Emory said he was honoured to contribute to the anniversary project, describing Fela Kuti as one of the most inspirational artists across all forms of art.

“It’s an honor to work on this 50th anniversary vinyl release of Zombie, and also some apparel,” Emory said.

He also highlighted the continued relevance of Fela Kuti’s music and political messages, noting that the Nigerian music legend’s lyrics remain meaningful decades after they were originally recorded.

Fela Kuti’s Legacy Celebrated Worldwide

The “Zombie” 50th anniversary edition comes at a significant period for Fela Kuti’s legacy. The Afrobeat pioneer was recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, further cementing his influence on global music and popular culture.

Fela Kuti also became the first African artist to receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, marking another major milestone in the international recognition of his contribution to music.

His influence continues to be felt among musicians, designers and cultural figures around the world, with his music remaining an important reference point in discussions about African politics, social justice and artistic freedom.

‘Expensive Shit’ Also Gets 50th Anniversary Edition

Another major Fela Kuti release, “Expensive Shit,” is also being reissued as part of the anniversary celebrations.

The 50th anniversary edition of “Expensive Shit,” designed by Tarin Karimbux, is scheduled for release on November 20.

The special edition will reportedly be pressed on gold nugget vinyl and packaged in a trifold jacket combining elements of the original record sleeve with newly licensed photographs by Femi Bankole Osunla and John Collins.

The package will also include a dossier envelope containing a poster, print and newspaper clipping, with the entire set finished with a metallic gold foil band.

The anniversary releases offer fans and collectors a chance to celebrate the enduring legacy of Fela Kuti, Afrobeat music and some of the most influential albums in African music history.
