The Ghana Ministry of Health has secured a new pathway to help qualified Ghanaian nurses and health professionals access employment opportunities in the United States following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of Ghana and the City of Columbus, Ohio.
The agreement was signed by Ghana’s Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment after months of technical discussions with their counterparts in the United States.
The partnership is expected to pave the way for detailed arrangements for the ethical recruitment and deployment of Ghanaian healthcare professionals, with nurses expected to be a major focus.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh said the agreement is not solely about international recruitment but also seeks to protect the rights, welfare and professional interests of Ghanaian health workers recruited for employment abroad.
According to the Minister, the initiative forms part of government’s efforts to create credible and decent international job opportunities for Ghanaian healthcare professionals, while ensuring that recruitment processes comply with Ghana’s Migration Policy and recognised international standards.
He explained that the Ghana-Columbus partnership builds on the existing Sister-City relationship between Accra and Columbus, as well as the Ghana Labour Exchange Programme.
The Health Ministry said it will continue exploring partnerships that can provide decent jobs for Ghanaian nurses and other healthcare professionals overseas.
The initiative is also expected to promote ethical migration, professional development and international employment opportunities while safeguarding the welfare, labour rights and professional interests of Ghanaian health workers.
The Ghana-Columbus agreement therefore represents a potential new avenue for qualified Ghanaian nurses seeking nursing jobs in the USA and healthcare employment opportunities abroad.
