Ghana Bauxite Company Limited (GBC), operator of the Awaso bauxite mine, has appointed Ecobank Ghana PLC as its exclusive mandated arranger to mobilise up to US$250 million in financing to support a major mining expansion and modernisation programme.
The agreement, signed in Accra on October 28, 2026, is aimed at increasing bauxite production, upgrading mining equipment, improving transportation and materials-handling infrastructure, and providing working capital for the company’s operations.
The proposed financing package comprises a term loan and a revolving credit facility. Ecobank Ghana will structure the facilities, engage potential financial institutions and coordinate the financing syndication process.
However, the US$250 million represents the maximum targeted financing and not funds already disbursed to the company. The final amount and financing conditions will depend on the outcome of the mobilisation process.
GBC Expands Mining Equipment and Workforce
The financing initiative follows significant investments by GBC’s majority shareholder, IOP Group, to strengthen operations at the Awaso mine.
The company reports that it has acquired 56 pieces of mining equipment and 198 trucks, including Sino, RDT, TX 400 and Howo 371 vehicles.
GBC has also increased its contract workforce from 465 to 1,061 employees, comprising 976 men and 85 women.
According to Isaac Ofori Poku, Chairman of IOP Group and Executive Chairman of Ghana Bauxite Company, the company’s objective is to transform the Awaso mine into a modern, efficient and globally competitive mining operation.
He explained that the Ecobank financing arrangement would provide the financial foundation for the company’s next phase of expansion, while supporting Ghana’s broader ambitions in bauxite beneficiation, alumina refining and mineral value addition.
Ghana Targets Greater Value Addition in Bauxite Industry
Beyond increasing mining production, the proposed investment could contribute to Ghana’s efforts to develop its local mineral-processing industry and reduce dependence on exporting raw minerals.
Ghana Bauxite Company reportedly exported a record 1.7 million metric tonnes of bauxite in 2024, supplying China and other international markets.
Bauxite is a major raw material used in producing alumina, which is subsequently processed into aluminium. Developing local alumina refining capacity could attract industrial investment, create skilled employment and generate additional business opportunities for Ghanaian companies.
Although GBC has expressed interest in supporting domestic mineral processing, the Ecobank financing mandate does not mean an alumina refinery has been approved, financed or scheduled for construction. Such a project would require additional investment, infrastructure, reliable electricity supply and commercial feasibility assessments.
Potential Economic Benefits and Job Creation
The expansion of the Awaso mine could create opportunities for local businesses operating in transportation, logistics, engineering, equipment maintenance and other mining-related services.
Increased mining activity could also support employment, skills development and economic growth in communities surrounding the operation.
However, the long-term benefits will depend on sustainable job creation, greater participation by Ghanaian suppliers, improved worker safety and responsible environmental management.
The US$250 million financing initiative therefore represents an important step in Ghana Bauxite Company’s expansion strategy. Its ultimate success will depend on securing the proposed funds and translating the investment into higher production, improved operational efficiency and greater economic benefits for Ghana.
