Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah has been appointed as the new CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications (GCT) and the Digital Chamber of Ghana (DCG), with effect from October 1, 2025.

With nearly 20 years of progressive leadership experience in Ghana’s digital, FMCG, and telecoms industries, Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah brings to her new positions a wealth of business knowledge as well as a track record of forming alliances and achieving results.

Throughout her career, she has held influential roles at top international companies such as Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC (Diageo/Castel Group), Tigo (Millicom Ghana), MTN Ghana, and AirtelTigo (AT Ghana).

Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah has been at the front of revolutionary initiatives reshaping Ghana’s digital and telecommunications landscape throughout her telecom career.

She led high-stakes public policy advocacy, supported measures that improved regulatory compliance, increased connectivity, and fortified industry-government ties, and was instrumental in obtaining regulatory clearances for Ghana’s first historic telecom merger.

She played a key role at MTN Ghana in obtaining the 3G licence and the rights to land submarine cables, which helped the company become the market leader in Ghana for data services.

Sylvia oversaw executive leadership at AirtelTigo during one of Ghana’s most intricate acquisitions, negotiating stakeholder management, regulatory environments, and government interactions after the merger.

She was a previous Council Member of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, which gave her extensive knowledge of the Chamber’s governance and mission. She also backed the purchase of its EMI License from the Bank of Ghana.

Along with her executive responsibilities, Sylvia has been a member of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) Board of Trustees, which is part of the Ministry of Communications. In this capacity, she has helped develop plans for digital inclusion and the extension of connectivity to underprivileged areas.

Additionally, Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah supported projects meant to promote entrepreneurship, innovation, and the expansion of Ghana’s digital economy while serving as a former member of the Ghana Innovation Hub’s advisory board.

Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah most recently held the position of Director of Corporate Relations at Guinness Ghana, where she oversaw reputation management, sustainability, public policy advocacy, and strategic communications, all of which resulted in notable victories.

These included promoting local sourcing, protecting their operating licence, and spearheading their company sustainability initiative in Ghana.

Stephen Blewett, the CEO of MTN Ghana and the Chair of the Governing Council, commented on her appointment, saying, “Sylvia’s appointment represents an exciting new chapter for the Chamber. Her deep roots in the telecom sector, coupled with her proven ability to unite stakeholders and deliver tangible results, position her perfectly to lead the industry Chamber into its next phase of digital growth and innovation.”

The announcement today comes after Dr Kenneth Ashigbey’s tenure, which lasted almost eight years, was successfully concluded in June 2025.

His leadership and talents helped build robust advocacy channels for the industry and set the foundation for the Digital Chamber, for which the Council is grateful.

“I am humbled to lead the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications and the Digital Chamber of Ghana at such a defining time for Ghana’s digital journey. My mandate is clear – strengthening collaboration across government, industry and consumers. Together with our members, we will advocate for policies that enable inclusive and sustainable industry growth, safeguard critical telecommunication infrastructure, empower innovation, and ensure Ghana remains at the forefront of Africa’s digital renaissance,” Sylvia said, articulating her vision for the position.

Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah has an MBA in Management from Coventry University (UK), a London School of Economics certification in Public Policy Analysis, and a Saïd Business School certification in Leading Sustainable Corporations from the University of Oxford.

The choice of Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah demonstrates the two Chambers’ dedication to imaginative leadership that benefits business, the government, and all Ghanaians. The two Chambers wish her well as she embarks on her new chapter and promise to be there for her at every turn.
