Newly sworn-in Deputy Chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah, has assured the public that the commission will carry out its electoral duties with fairness, impartiality and independence, without fear or favour.

Dr Asamoah made the commitment on Monday, October 12, 2026, during the swearing-in ceremony for himself and fellow Deputy Chairperson Emelia Afi Agbenyo.

Speaking on behalf of both deputy chairpersons, he urged Ghanaians to actively participate in the work of the Electoral Commission by engaging with the institution, offering constructive criticism and contributing ideas to improve its performance.

He stressed that public participation and accountability were essential to building a strong and trusted electoral institution capable of delivering credible elections in Ghana.

Dr Asamoah assured the nation that the new leadership would remain committed to its constitutional responsibilities and work diligently to protect the integrity of the country’s electoral processes.

EC Deputy Chair Calls for Collective Responsibility in Ghana’s Elections

The newly appointed deputy chairperson emphasised that conducting credible elections should not be viewed as the sole responsibility of the Electoral Commission but as a shared national obligation.

According to him, the successful organisation of transparent, peaceful and credible elections requires cooperation among various state institutions, political organisations and the general public.

He identified political parties, Parliament, security agencies, civil society organisations, the judiciary, the media and individual citizens as important stakeholders whose participation would help strengthen Ghana’s democratic process.

Dr Asamoah called on these groups to work closely with the commission to promote electoral transparency, accountability and public confidence in election outcomes.

He noted that collaboration among stakeholders would be crucial to addressing challenges within the electoral system and ensuring that the commission performs its duties effectively.

Joseph Asamoah Urges Ghanaians to Support Electoral Commission

Dr Asamoah reiterated his appeal for Ghanaians to engage constructively with the Electoral Commission and contribute to improving its operations.

He maintained that criticism and public scrutiny, when directed towards strengthening the institution, could help improve electoral administration and reinforce democratic governance.

The deputy chairperson’s pledge comes as the EC leadership undertakes responsibilities central to maintaining confidence in Ghana’s electoral system.

His remarks underline the importance of political neutrality, institutional accountability and cooperation among stakeholders in ensuring that future elections are conducted fairly and transparently.

The commitment by Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah and Emelia Afi Agbenyo is expected to draw public attention to the role of the Electoral Commission in protecting Ghana’s democracy and upholding the credibility of the country’s elections.
