Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has stressed that the day-to-day administration of health institutions is the responsibility of management and not Boards of Directors or individual Board members.
The Minister made the remarks during the second day of the Ministry of Health’s High-Level Mid-Year Review Retreat in Ho, where participants are receiving training on corporate governance, institutional accountability and the responsibilities of Boards.
According to Hon. Akandoh, a clear understanding of the different roles of Boards, Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and management teams is essential for effective governance in Ghana’s health sector.
“The day-to-day running of the institution is not the responsibility of the Board or Board members,” he stated, emphasising the need to prevent unnecessary interference in the daily administration of health institutions.
Health Minister Pushes for Stronger Corporate Governance
Hon. Akandoh said good corporate governance is critical to ensuring that public resources are properly managed and effectively used to improve healthcare delivery and the well-being of Ghanaians.
He also reiterated his commitment to ensuring that health agencies operate under appropriate Legislative Instruments (LIs) to strengthen governance structures and improve institutional accountability.
The Minister explained that clearly defining the responsibilities of Boards and CEOs would help prevent governance challenges, reduce institutional interference and promote more efficient management of public health institutions.
Health Institutions Urged to Use Public Funds Responsibly
The Health Minister also called on health institutions to exercise greater prudence when spending public funds.
He specifically highlighted expenditure on seminars, training programmes and official travel, urging institutions to ensure that spending decisions take into account Ghana’s current economic and financial circumstances.
Hon. Akandoh said the corporate governance training would equip participants with the knowledge required to understand their responsibilities, avoid institutional infractions and make decisions that promote transparency, accountability and effective healthcare management.
He encouraged participants at the retreat to actively engage in the training and develop a clear understanding of their respective roles and responsibilities.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Health Ghana to strengthen corporate governance, improve accountability and ensure efficient management of resources across the country’s health institutions.
