The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has identified rising global commodity prices, particularly gold, as a key factor behind its decision to upgrade Ghana’s economic growth forecast for 2026.

According to Zeine Zeidane, Director of the IMF’s African Department, the increase in international commodity prices could strengthen Ghana’s economic performance by boosting export earnings, improving the trade balance, and supporting overall economic growth.

Mr. Zeidane made the remarks in response to a question from Joy Business during the release of the IMF’s Regional Economic Outlook, which examined economic trends and growth prospects across Africa.

He explained that Ghana’s stronger-than-expected economic performance during the first half of 2026 also influenced the Fund’s decision to revise its growth projections upward. The IMF expects the positive economic momentum recorded during the period to continue in the coming months.

Gold remains an important contributor to Ghana’s export revenue, foreign exchange earnings, and broader economic activity. Higher international gold prices could provide additional support for the country’s external sector, strengthen export performance, and improve its balance of trade.

The revised IMF growth outlook highlights the potential benefits of favourable global commodity markets for Ghana’s economy. However, the extent to which the country benefits will depend on commodity price movements, export performance, and the sustainability of domestic economic growth.

As Ghana continues its economic recovery efforts, developments in the global gold market and other commodity sectors are expected to remain important factors influencing the country’s economic outlook, investment climate, and financial stability.
