Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the member of parliament for Assin Central, has explained a ‘misinterpretation’ after being quoted in a popular video as saying that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was robbing the nation like there was no tomorrow.
The NPP flagbearer candidate asserted in a statement made public on Wednesday that the statements made against him are a “complete and unfortunate misrepresentation” of the opinions he had during the weekend in Kumasi when he met with NPP communicators to raise money.
He claims that he complained on the occasion that the NPP communicators were failing the party and that corruption will be a problem in every government, especially one that lasts for eight years.
Mr. Agyapong clarified that when he addressed his audience, he said, “We have, sadly, allowed the ruthless opposition propaganda machinery, the mass media, and the social media to create the deadly impression that the NPP was looting like there was no tomorrow, including allegations of stashing funds abroad.”
I want to emphasize that the offensive video was intentionally edited to sow discord against me, Ken Ohene Agyapong, and to bring the Akufo-Addo government into disrepute. It was taken from a private meeting with some communicators that took place over the weekend in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.
The presidential candidate claimed that he warned the crowd not to fall for the lies spread against “our government and party.”
In addition, he said, “I voiced my indignation and unhappiness over the way we were allowing ourselves to be unfairly disparaged in the media, especially social media, as if we were worse than the NDC, which is definitely not the case.
“I am fully aware of the commitment shown by President Akufo-Addo, in deeds and institutional reforms, in combating the canker of corruption in Ghana and the challenges that entail,” he asserted.
He affirmed that he was still an ardent supporter of the NPP and expressed his desire to help the group “break the eight,” saying that “together, we face John Mahama and the NDC for the showdown on December 7, 2024.”
