A nationwide power outage occurred on Friday, September 8, 2023, around 7 PM local time. According to the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), the primary reason of the outage was a disturbance within its system.

Significant areas throughout the nation were affected, including Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, Tamale, and numerous large cities.

By the time 8 PM rolled around, three-quarters of the customers had their power supply restored thanks to GRIDCo’s restoration efforts.

In a formal statement, GRIDCo apologized for any inconvenience caused and thanked the public for their understanding as they carefully worked to restore electricity to all impacted locations.

“The Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo), the ‘Operator’ of the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS), has officially reported a system disturbance occurring at 19:03 GMT, affecting multiple regions across the nation,” the statement read.

“Immediate restoration efforts were initiated, resulting in three-quarters of customers having their power supply reinstated by 21:00 GMT”.

“Ongoing efforts to restore power are in line with the gradual recovery of generation capacity,” it said. In addition to expressing its regret for any inconvenience, GRIDCo thanks its loyal customers for their understanding and perseverance throughout the restoration process.
