Thomas Quaye, a member of Hearts of Oak and a Ghanaian international, passed away at the age of 57.
According to his family, Quaye passed away on Sunday, May 21, 2023, in the 37 Military Hospital after a protracted battle with a cerebrovascular accident.
Thomas began his professional football career at Ken Harrison in Mamprobi, progressed through the State Transport Company Soccer Team to Tejitex, and then to Hearts of Oak’s youth team Auroras FC. Thomas also played for various other Ghana Premier League clubs.

With players like Benjamin Adjei, Shamo Quaye, Ebenezer Dugbatey, Joe Addo, Samuel Ablade Kumah, and Ezekiel Alamu of the renowned Accra Hearts of Oak’s Musical Youth of the late 1980s, which won the Ghana First Division League in 1989/90 season, he made his debut and only appearance for Accra Hearts of Oak club in 1987.
At Accra Hearts of Oak, he also performed alongside musicians including Yaw Preko, Sam Johnson, Opoku Agyemang, Emmanuel Armah, Emmanuel Quarshie, Henry Acquah, and Stephen Appiah.
The former player, who is regarded as one of the all-time best defenders in the Ghanaian Premier League, also played for Dawu Youngsters from 1990 to 1994 and Real Tamale United from 1997 to 1999.
His dependability and consistency led to his spending time in 1987, 1988, and 1989 with the national under-17 squad (Black Starlets), under-20 team (Black Satellites), and senior team (Black Stars).
After suffering numerous injuries, he ended his career as a professional athlete in the United Arab Emirates in 2002.
After retiring from football, he obtained the Basic Certificate from the National Sports Council and the Ghana Football Association in 2000 and 2005, the Intermediate Certificate from the Ghana Football Association in 2006, and the U.E.FA Certificate in 2006.
In addition to coaching the Universal F.C., Five Star FC, Subway FC, Third World FC, Fire Rehoboth FC, and Fire Service FC, he also actively worked with the Ghana National Fire Service’s Sports Department until his untimely death.
Margaret, his wife, and their five children, Thomas, Frank, Bernard, Kevin, and Karen, survive him.
