Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has joined traditional leaders and residents of Bonoman for the 2026 Meko Bono Festival in Atebubu, highlighting the role of Ghana’s cultural heritage in promoting tourism, investment and local economic development.
The Vice President attended the celebration alongside the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie; Bono East Regional Minister, Hon. Francis Owusu Antwi; Atebubu Member of Parliament, Hon. Sanja Nanja; and other government officials.
Speaking at the festival, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang stressed the historical importance of Bonoman and called for greater efforts to preserve its rich cultural heritage while transforming it into sustainable economic opportunities for local communities.
She noted that festivals such as Meko Bono can serve as important platforms for Ghana tourism, investment opportunities, entrepreneurship, job creation and local economic growth.
The Vice President also urged traditional authorities and communities to continue protecting Bonoman’s history, indigenous languages, traditional institutions, cultural sites and knowledge passed down through generations.
She assured traditional leaders that the government will continue collaborating with them on key development priorities, including agriculture, road infrastructure, environmental protection, land management and community development.
Vice President Opoku-Agyemang further highlighted opportunities available to Atebubu through government initiatives such as the 24-Hour Economy, Accelerated Export Development Programme and Feed Ghana Programme. She identified agro-processing, agricultural value addition, transportation and logistics as key areas with significant potential for economic growth.
She also pointed to ongoing road projects under the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme, which are expected to improve connectivity between farming communities, production centres and major markets.
The Vice President commended the Meko Bono Festival for strengthening unity and social ties among the people of Bonoman over the past five years. She encouraged stakeholders to turn the partnerships, ideas, business opportunities and investments generated through the festival into long-term development projects.
The 2026 Meko Bono Festival therefore serves not only as a celebration of Bonoman’s cultural heritage but also as an opportunity to promote tourism development, agriculture, investment, entrepreneurship and economic transformation in the Bono East Region.
Vice President Opoku-Agyemang expressed hope that Meko Bono will continue to preserve the heritage of Bonoman while creating new opportunities for sustainable development and prosperity for future generations.
