The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old man, identified as Gyamfi Christian, in connection with an alleged fake gold syndicate operating in the Berekum Municipality.
The arrest follows a complaint filed by 29-year-old gold aggregator Christopher Awuni, who reported that four men posing as legitimate gold sellers allegedly sold him 110 troy ounces of gold for GH¢1.1 million in July 2026.
Police investigations later established that the gold was fake. The suspected counterfeit gold has since been taken into police custody and retained as an exhibit as investigations continue.
Police Arrest Suspect in Fake Gold Case
According to the Bono Regional Police Command, intelligence-led investigations resulted in the arrest of Gyamfi Christian at his hideout in Wamfie in the Dormaa East District on August 17, 2026.
Bono Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, said the suspect admitted his alleged involvement in the transaction during interrogation.
The suspect reportedly told investigators that the transaction took place at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality.
Police investigations have also identified three alleged accomplices, including Abraham, popularly known as Frenchman, who is believed to be the leader of the group, as well as Isaac Antwi and Balthazar. The three suspects are currently at large.
Suspects Linked to Another GH¢1.4 Million Fraud Case
Preliminary investigations have reportedly uncovered another alleged gold fraud case involving GH¢1.4 million.
According to the police, the same group is suspected of defrauding another victim in Drobo earlier in 2026.
The development has prompted the Bono Regional Police Command to warn members of the public to exercise extreme caution when conducting gold purchases and other precious metals transactions.
Chief Inspector Akeelah urged individuals involved in the gold business to verify sellers and gold products before making large financial payments. He also encouraged the public to report suspicious gold trading activities to the police.
Police Hunt for Remaining Suspects
Gyamfi Christian remains in police custody and is assisting investigators as efforts continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged fake gold syndicate.
Police have intensified efforts to locate and arrest the remaining suspects believed to be involved in the alleged gold scam.
The Bono Regional Police Command is also appealing to anyone with information that could help investigators locate Abraham alias Frenchman, Isaac Antwi and Balthazar to report to the nearest police station.
The case highlights the importance of conducting proper verification and dealing with licensed and credible operators when engaging in gold trading in Ghana, particularly amid the country’s growing gold industry.
