Ghana’s Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supply has received a major boost following the arrival of MT Asharami Ghana, a 40,000-cubic-metre LPG carrier that delivered approximately 5,000 tonnes of LPG to the country on its maiden voyage.

The arrival of the vessel was officially marked at the Tema Oil Jetty, highlighting growing investments in Ghana’s LPG import, storage and distribution infrastructure.

The investment by Sahara Group is aimed at improving the reliability of LPG supply while supporting Ghana’s transition towards cleaner cooking fuels and sustainable energy solutions.

Ghana Strengthens LPG Infrastructure

The ceremony attracted major stakeholders in Ghana’s energy sector, including the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, and the Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe.

Senior executives of Sahara Group, including Executive Directors Wale Ajibade and Adedeji Odunsi, Managing Director of Asharami Ghana Yaa Serwaa Alifo, and other industry stakeholders were also present.

The arrival of MT Asharami Ghana comes at a time when Ghana is seeking to increase access to LPG as a cleaner cooking fuel and reduce household dependence on charcoal and firewood.

The dedicated LPG carrier provides additional capacity within Ghana’s physical energy supply chain, enabling the country to receive and distribute larger volumes of LPG to households, commercial users and businesses.

Ghana Targets 50% LPG Access by 2030

The government has set a target of increasing LPG access in Ghana to 50 percent by 2030.

Achieving this target will require continued investment in infrastructure for the importation, transportation, storage and distribution of LPG across the country.

The National Petroleum Authority disclosed in 2024 that imported LPG accounted for approximately 70 percent of Ghana’s monthly LPG consumption, while the remaining 30 percent was supplied by the Ghana National Gas Company.

The latest investment in LPG shipping capacity is therefore expected to contribute to efforts to strengthen Ghana’s energy security and improve the reliability of LPG supplies.

Jinapor Highlights Importance of Clean Energy

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor described the arrival of MT Asharami Ghana as an important development in Ghana’s efforts to expand access to cleaner energy solutions.

According to the Energy and Green Transition Minister, government cannot achieve its energy-transition objectives without strong collaboration with private-sector investors.

He commended Sahara Group for its continued investment in Ghana’s energy sector and its contribution to energy security, economic growth and sustainable development.

Dr Jinapor also stressed the importance of infrastructure investment in achieving Ghana’s clean-cooking and energy-transition goals.

LPG Investment to Support Ghana’s Energy Transition

The government has increasingly identified LPG as an important component of Ghana’s clean cooking and energy transition agenda.

Greater use of LPG could help reduce dependence on traditional cooking fuels, including charcoal and firewood, while providing households and businesses with an alternative energy source.

Investments in LPG vessels, storage facilities and distribution networks are consequently becoming increasingly important as Ghana works to expand access to cleaner cooking fuels.

Sahara Group Reaffirms Commitment to Ghana

Sahara Group Executive Director Wale Ajibade said the maiden voyage of MT Asharami Ghana demonstrates the company’s commitment to expanding access to cleaner energy and strengthening Ghana’s energy security.

He also acknowledged the support of the National Petroleum Authority and its Chief Executive, saying their role was important in facilitating the process that resulted in the vessel’s arrival.

According to Ajibade, the maiden shipment represents the beginning of a broader initiative aimed at improving the availability and reliability of LPG supply in Ghana.

Asharami Ghana Highlights Long-Term LPG Investment

Managing Director of Asharami Ghana, Yaa Serwaa Alifo, said the arrival of MT Asharami Ghana marked the realisation of a long-term investment vision for Ghana’s energy sector.

She said the vessel would contribute to improving access to LPG for households and businesses while supporting the country’s broader clean-energy ambitions.

Alifo described the development as a demonstration of the company’s commitment to Ghana’s energy future and the expansion of reliable LPG supply infrastructure.

The arrival of MT Asharami Ghana is expected to strengthen Ghana’s LPG supply chain and support ongoing efforts to expand the use of clean cooking fuel, improve energy security and advance the country’s long-term energy transition goals.
