Former National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has expressed disappointment over his suspension from office but says he remains calm following the decision.

President John Dramani Mahama suspended Yaw Ampofo Ankrah on Thursday, October 1, 2026, amid controversy surrounding an alleged visa facilitation arrangement connected to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The controversy centres on allegations that approximately US$623,000 was received from prospective travellers who were seeking assistance with visa applications and travel arrangements for the tournament.

Yaw Ampofo Ankrah Speaks After Suspension

Speaking exclusively to JoySports following his suspension, Mr Ampofo Ankrah said he was disappointed that he had not been given an opportunity to fully explain his side of the matter.

“I’m still calm, a bit disappointed,” he said.

He added that he was not someone who would react angrily to the situation but expressed concern that he had not been given the opportunity to discuss the circumstances surrounding the allegations.

According to the former NSA Director-General, he would have preferred an opportunity to explain the situation and have a detailed discussion about the issues that led to his suspension.

Focus Was on Preparing Accra Sports Stadium

Yaw Ampofo Ankrah said that, before his removal from office, his attention had been focused on preparing the Accra Sports Stadium and other facilities under the National Sports Authority for upcoming national sporting activities.

He said preparations were particularly important ahead of assignments involving the Black Stars, Ghana’s senior national football team, as well as other national events.

“I’ve been focused on preparing the facility, Accra Sports Stadium, and other areas around the National Sports Authority to get ready for the Black Stars and other national assignments,” he stated.

New Acting NSA Director-General Appointed

Following the suspension of Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong has been appointed Acting Director-General of the National Sports Authority.

The development comes as the controversy surrounding the alleged World Cup visa facilitation arrangement continues to attract public attention.
