IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has indicated that his quick promotion within the Ghana Police Service from Constable in 1991 to Commissioner of Police (COP) in 2014 was made possible by his exceptional academic credentials, his dedication, and the grace of God.

He vehemently refuted claims that his rapid ascension was the result of favors given to him or any political connections.

Dr. Dampare went to great lengths to describe the conditions under which he was promoted from one rank to another and how he ended up at the highest rank of the service in the relatively short period of 24 years when he appeared before the bipartisan committee of Parliament investigating a plot to remove him (the IGP) that was revealed in a leaked tape.

He emphasized that he became aware of the purposeful policy to support officers’ academic progress by promoting those who earned higher qualifications not long after being hired into the military in 1990.

He utilized it, moving up from holding an Ordinary (O) level certificate to earning an Advanced (A) level certificate, becoming a chartered accountant, and pursuing a PhD after earning a master’s degree.

Dr. Dampare has been accused of receiving political favors or having access to lobbyists, which helped him rise to the top of the police force without merit.

Dr. Dampare informed the committee that he consistently won honors thanks to his hard work and recalled how, while a recruit and an officer, the only award he failed to win was the marksmanship one.

Given that he is a Christian and benefits from God’s mercy, he also credited God for his amazing work in granting him his extraordinary advancements.
