Over the course of five years and seven months, 3,131 people have died in traffic accidents in the Ashanti Region, making the area’s roadways the deadliest in the nation.

Between January 2020 and December 2024, 2,831 fatalities were recorded by the National Road Safety Authority.

There were also 441 deaths in the area between January 2025 and July 2025, for a total of 3,131 deaths.

In 2025, these 441 deaths accounted for 25% of the total number of deaths nationwide, making them the most fatalities and injuries.

This information was presented at the second road safety journalism training, which was organized by Vital Strategies (VS) and the Legal Resources Center (LRC).

As part of a project called “Supporting Advocacy Interventions Towards the Passage into Law of the Reviewed Road Traffic Act and the Development of Standards for Motorcycle Helmets,” the training concentrated on helmet standards and speed management.

This was revealed by Regional Road Safety Director Akwasi Agyemang Boateng, who called the state of road safety in the area “deadly” in an interview with Elisha Adarkwah of Kumasi FM.

He emphasized that the transportation system needs to implement more rigorous and continuous road safety enforcement and education.

Boateng also argued for engineering solutions to solve the problems, pointing out that bad road infrastructure, behavioral disorders, and traffic blunders were all contributing factors.

The training’s goal, according to Enock Jengre, a Programme Officer at the Legal Resource Centre (LRC), was to motivate news editors and journalists to use their platforms to advance road safety and contribute to a decrease in collisions, injuries, and fatalities.

While covering traffic accidents is important, Ms. Mavis Obeng Mensah, Communications Director of the Blomberge Philanthropic Initiative for Global Road Safety Ghana (BIGRS), encouraged reporters to use solutions journalism to find answers to the problems posed by traffic accidents.
