The Police Administration denied allegations of purported illicit connections and electricity theft at the Kumasi Central Police Station and the Osu Police Barracks.

According to the Police, there is no motivation for the Service or any of its personnel to steal electricity as claimed because, as a government entity, the payment of electricity by the police is centrally administered and not directly paid for by individual police officers or commands.

The Police Administration claimed it was taken aback by these claims and ordered inquiries into them, which led to the discovery that three buildings at the Osu Barracks had their electricity removed by the ECG because they lacked electricity meters. Similar circumstances occurred in Kumasi, where one building’s power was cut off because it lacked a designated meter.

The Osu Police Barracks and Kumasi Central Police Station situations, according to the law enforcement agency’s records checks, have both been ongoing for a while.

Further investigation revealed that since the ECG had said that it did not have any meters accessible at the time, all connections at the Osu barracks and the Kumasi Central Police Station were made straight to the poles by the ECG. Officials from the ECG made the connections in both cases.

Following the investigation, the management of ECG met with the Inspector-General of Police at his request to discuss the findings. They were informed that the police had not been involved in any unlawful connections or power theft, which they agreed and expressed sorry for.

Following the investigation and before the meeting, it was ordered for all Police Regional Commands to formally invite and work with ECG officials in their operational areas to review all current electricity connections and metering in all Police facilities across the nation, including the possibility of installing bulk meters rather than individual meters for each building as has been the case over the years.

Thus, the Police administration is requesting that the public ignore the unfounded accusations of power theft and illicit connections that have been made against it.
