A suspect in the illegal possession of 713 slabs of substances suspected of being narcotic drugs has been taken into custody by the Ashanti South Regional Police Command.

This occurred after an operation at the Ashanti Region’s Asanso Bekwai checkpoint.

On January 26, 2026, a police unit on snap check duty stopped a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718-25 at the Asanso checkpoint, leading to the arrest of the suspect, Atampugri Akanyani, the vehicle’s driver.

Nine nylon sacks containing dried leaves that were thought to be narcotic drugs were found hidden inside the bus during a check of the vehicle.

According to a police situational report (SITREP), which Graphic Online was able to view, the sacks were opened to reveal 713 crushed slabs of dried leaves that were thought to be narcotic narcotics.

“During the arrest, the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with an amount of GH¢150,000.00, which was declined,” according to the SITREP.

“The suspect is currently in police custody assisting investigations, as efforts continue to trace the source of the suspected narcotic drugs and identify other persons connected to the offence,” it said.
