Akuapem North Member of Parliament (MP), Sammi Awuku, has denied reports that he was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
Mr Awuku dismissed the reports in a video shared on social media on Sunday, August 16, where he was seen in Kumasi with popular National Democratic Congress (NDC) sympathiser Appiah Stadium.
Addressing the alleged arrest, the Akuapem North MP questioned how he could have been detained on Saturday when he was participating in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regional elections in the Eastern Region.
“Claims that I was arrested on Saturday are completely false. Yesterday we had our regional elections, and today, Sunday, I am here in Kumasi,” he said.
Earlier reports had claimed that the former National Lottery Authority (NLA) Director-General had been detained by EOCO over alleged corruption and financial irregularities linked to his tenure at the Authority.
The reports further suggested that the alleged detention was connected to ongoing EOCO investigations into financial transactions and activities at the National Lottery Authority.
However, Sammi Awuku has firmly rejected the arrest claims, maintaining that he was not arrested by EOCO and was actively involved in the NPP’s regional election activities.
The development has attracted attention amid ongoing discussions about EOCO investigations, financial accountability, corruption allegations and public sector governance in Ghana.
