A violent incident that interrupted the District Schools Athletics Games in Agona Swedru, Central Ghana, on February 19 has prompted the Ghana Police Service to open an investigation.
Originally intended to honour students’ athletic prowess, the event reportedly turned into turmoil as a fight broke out between athletes from two different schools.
A physical incident broke out between students from the Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS) and Obrachire Senior High Technical School after tensions between the two groups escalated, according to witnesses.
During the disturbance, a group perceived to be from SWESBUS allegedly attacked an Obrachire student.
According to reports, the victim was beaten with rods and smashed with stones until onlookers intervened to bring the situation under control.
Videos that have gone viral on social media depict scenes of panic as the incident happened, with a mob encircling the injured student.
He was subsequently taken to a medical institution, where he is presently undergoing treatment.
In addition to denouncing the violence, police have promised the public that those responsible will be found and dealt with legally.
According to authorities, investigations are still on, and more information will be released when work is done to determine the complete facts of the occurrence.
