Haruna Iddrisu, the country’s minister of education, has announced that all schools nationwide must now adopt Ghanaian mother tongues as a medium of instruction.
He emphasised that the instruction is effective immediately when he made the news at the Accra inauguration of the “Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disabilities” project.
“I am directing the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service and the GES that from today, teacher use of mother tongue instruction is now compulsory in all Ghanaian schools,” Mr. Iddrisu said.
He also said that the directive was essential to Ghana’s educational and cultural change and charged the Ghana Education Service (GES) with making sure it was strictly enforced.
“The GES is to ensure strict enforcement of this. The Ghanaian child was not born into an English family but into a proud Ashanti, Akan family and deserves to learn in that language,” the Minister continued.
Mr. Iddrisu proposes that the new policy is in line with President John Mahama’s Reset Agenda, which seeks to strengthen cultural identity, restore national pride, and restructure the educational system to better meet Ghana’s socioeconomic objectives.
He underlined that the program would protect indigenous languages and cultural legacy for future generations in addition to enhancing students’ understanding and learning results.
