This year marks the 60th anniversary of the cedi, the country’s currency.

Under the theme “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience,” the Bank of Ghana is celebrating this milestone.

President John Dramani Mahama will serve as the Special Guest of Honour during the Cedi@60 celebrations’ official kickoff on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre.

A Currency Conference will be held as part of the national celebration, bringing together top experts from academia, the private sector, and international central banks to consider the future of Ghana’s financial system and reflect on 60 years of the country’s monetary history.

Regional roadshows and public education campaigns about currency security and clean note handling are other signature initiatives.

Youth-focused contests in music, art, and writing will also be held in an effort to increase public awareness of the Cedi’s significance and history.

The Cedi@60 celebration, according to the Bank of Ghana, presents a calculated chance to honour Ghana’s monetary sovereignty, increase public participation in currency management, and rekindle national trust in the cedi as a foundation of identity and economic stability.

Since its first introduction on July 19, 1965, the cedi has experienced numerous redesigns and modifications.

It represents the nation’s perseverance and economic independence over the course of six decades of national growth.

It is anticipated that the celebration would result in a greater concerted effort to preserve the integrity of the local money for future generations as well as a revitalised public understanding of its past.
