A missile strike that hurt Ghanaian peacekeepers with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has been denounced by the UN.

The incident happened on March 6 during intense gunfire at the peacekeepers’ location in Al Qawzah, southwest Lebanon.

Three Ghanaian troops were hurt while inside their position during the attack, according to a statement released by the UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson.

The Secretary-General emphasised that the safety and security of UN people and property must always be respected, denounced the event, and wished the injured personnel a quick and full recovery.

“The inviolability of United Nations installations must be respected by all, and those responsible must be held accountable,” the statement emphasised.

The UN urged all parties involved in the conflict to de-escalate hostilities and comply with the conditions of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which was issued in 2006 to terminate Israel’s war with Hezbollah and maintain the cease-fire along the Israel-Lebanon border.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has previously reported that four UNIFIL soldiers were injured when the headquarters of the Ghanaian battalion in southern Lebanon came under missile attack.

According to the report, three of the soldiers received minor injuries, while one was badly injured.

All injured servicemen are reportedly in stable condition; the critically injured soldier has subsequently undergone surgery and is responding to treatment.

According to the GAF, the airstrike totally damaged the 14 officers’ lodging.

It stated that the impacted employees had since received the required logistical and welfare assistance, as well as re-accommodation and re-kitting.

According to the GAF, the battalion maintained a positive attitude and carried out its peacekeeping duties under the UN mission in spite of the incident.

Ghana has long been a troop contributor to the UNIFIL mission, which was formed in 1978 to monitor the end of hostilities and promote calm along the Israel-Lebanon border.
