Nigerian singer Timaya has credited late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti with playing a major role in the growth and international recognition of Nigerian music.
Speaking during an episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, Timaya said Fela’s music and legacy have influenced him as well as several generations of Nigerian musicians.
The singer noted that Fela Kuti’s influence extends beyond Nigeria, describing his impact on African music as global. According to Timaya, Fela’s name and music continue to receive significant recognition in countries such as Cameroon.
Timaya said Fela’s contribution to Nigerian music was so significant that he would never disrespect the legendary musician or members of his family.
He explained that many Nigerian musicians owe part of their international recognition to the foundation created by Fela and other pioneers of African music.

“Without Fela, nobody would have known us and we wouldn’t be here singing music,” Timaya said, while referring to the Afrobeat pioneer as “Baba.”
He also pointed to Fela’s enduring popularity in Cameroon, claiming that his music is still celebrated through dedicated radio programmes.
Tekno Disagrees Over Fela’s Status
Timaya’s comments come amid a separate debate involving Nigerian singer Tekno, who recently maintained that Fela Kuti is not his “king” of Nigerian music.
During an interview with Yanga FM Lagos, Tekno reiterated his preference for legendary highlife musician Oliver De Coque.
Tekno explained that his personal background influenced his musical perspective. He said he is Igbo, grew up in Kaduna and was not exposed to Fela Kuti’s music while growing up.
“Fela is not and will never be my king [of music]. Oliver De Coque is the king for me,” Tekno stated.
The contrasting views have highlighted the different musical influences and personal experiences that have shaped Nigerian artists across generations, while Fela Kuti’s contribution to the development of Afrobeat remains a major part of Nigeria’s music history.
