Vice President of Ghana, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has officially commissioned five newly appointed Ambassadors and High Commissioners-designate to represent Ghana in key countries around the world.
The ceremony took place on August 13, 2026, as Ghana continues efforts to strengthen its diplomatic relations, promote international cooperation and advance the country’s economic and national interests.
Five Ghanaian Envoys Appointed
The newly commissioned diplomatic representatives are:
- Dr. Robert Afriyie – High Commissioner-designate to Sierra Leone
- Dr. Senalor Kwabla Yawlui – Ambassador-designate to Norway
- Maxwell Nyarko-Lartey – Ambassador-designate to Kuwait
- Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu – High Commissioner-designate to Nigeria
- Isaac Joshua Essilfie – Ambassador-designate to Niger
Vice President Outlines Key Diplomatic Priorities
Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang charged the new envoys to protect and promote Ghana’s national interests, strengthen bilateral relations with their host countries and support the government’s foreign policy objectives.
She also urged them to promote Ghana as an attractive destination for trade and investment, support Ghanaians living abroad and strengthen ties with the Ghanaian diaspora to contribute to national development.
The Vice President outlined specific priorities for each diplomatic mission.
Kuwait: The Ambassador-designate is expected to strengthen bilateral relations, address outstanding issues, promote trade and investment, and enhance engagement with the Ghanaian community in Kuwait.
Sierra Leone: The High Commissioner-designate has been tasked with building on the outcomes of the recent Ghana-Sierra Leone Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC) and translating agreements into practical results while protecting the interests of Ghanaians.
Nigeria: Ghana’s High Commissioner-designate is expected to deepen political and economic cooperation with Nigeria, promote trade and investment and work with Nigerian authorities to safeguard the interests of Ghanaian citizens.
Niger: The Ambassador-designate is expected to strengthen Ghana-Niger relations, particularly following President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to Niamey in 2025. He is also expected to deepen Ghana’s engagement with Niger and the wider Sahel region, particularly on peace and stability.
Norway: Ghana’s Ambassador-designate has been encouraged to explore stronger cooperation with Norway in areas including green technology, education, the blue economy and research. The mission is also expected to explore lessons from Norway’s experience in effective natural resource management.
Envoys Tasked to Deliver on Government KPIs
Professor Opoku-Agyemang assured the newly appointed envoys of the government’s support as they undertake their diplomatic responsibilities.
She urged them to serve Ghana with distinction and deliver on the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) introduced by President John Dramani Mahama in September 2025.
Speaking on behalf of the newly commissioned diplomats, Dr. Robert Afriyie, Ghana’s High Commissioner-designate to Sierra Leone, expressed gratitude to President Mahama for the appointments.
He assured the Vice President that the envoys would work diligently to represent Ghana’s interests abroad and contribute to the country’s development.
