In the Eastern Region, 325 people have perished in 1177 traffic accidents in the last 10 months.

In comparison to the same period previous year, this represents an 8% decline. 357 persons were killed in 2021.

At the inauguration ceremony for the training of Accident and Traffic Enforcement officers and DVLA Technicians and Engineers drawn from the Central, Greater Accra, Volta, and Eastern Regions, Dennis Yirebu, Eastern Regional Director of the National Road Safety Authority, revealed the information.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority in Koforidua is funding the training.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Yirebu demanded increased cooperation from other stakeholders in the enforcement of traffic laws.

Prince Adusei, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority’s deputy chief executive officer, claims that the DVLA has not yet received budgetary approval from the Ministry of Finance to execute the law.

Contrary to road traffic regulations that require all passenger vehicles to be equipped with an appropriate seat belt, many commercial vehicles, in particular minibuses and other freight cars converted to passenger cars, do not currently have seat belts for the passengers in the back seats.

When they acquire the necessary financial authorization, the DVLA and its stakeholders will start enforcing the legislation, Mr. Adusei hinted.

He asked drivers to follow the law in order to avoid collisions and tragedies.
