The Ministry of Health (MoH), in partnership with the National Ambulance Service (NAS), has handed over 30 ambulances stationed at the Ghana Air Force Base at Burma Camp in Accra to National Security for refurbishment.
The move is part of government’s efforts to restore unused emergency response vehicles and strengthen Ghana’s national ambulance fleet. Once renovated, inspected and certified for use, the ambulances are expected to improve the capacity of the National Ambulance Service to respond quickly to medical emergencies and provide timely pre-hospital care.
The handover followed legal clearance from the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice, which authorised the Ministry of Health to retrieve and assess the ambulances for possible operational deployment.
An initial assessment has already been conducted by the State Transport Company (STC). Additional technical inspections will be carried out to establish the roadworthiness of the vehicles and determine the level of refurbishment required before they can be deployed.
The keys to the 30 ambulances were formally presented to a representative of National Security, which will supervise the refurbishment process.
Officials present at the ceremony included the Legal Adviser to the Minister for Health, Lawyer Abubakar Mutiu-Rahaman; Board Chairman of the National Ambulance Service, Nana Baffour Kotei Kutin Sraman II, also known as Bremahene; Chief Executive Officer of NAS, Dr. (Med) George Kojo Owusu; as well as representatives from National Security and the Ghana Armed Forces.
Following the renovation, each ambulance will undergo the required technical inspections and roadworthiness tests before receiving approval for operational use.
The addition of the refurbished ambulances could significantly increase the operational strength of Ghana’s emergency medical transport system, enabling the National Ambulance Service to transport patients safely and respond more efficiently to medical emergencies across the country.
The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare system, improve emergency medical services, expand ambulance coverage and maximise public assets for the benefit of communities.
