The Government of Ghana has paid a total of GH¢4.45 billion to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and towards Second-Tier pension obligations for the period from January to September 2026.

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson announced that the payments comprised GH¢3.64 billion for SSNIT and GH¢809.71 million for Second-Tier pension obligations.

According to the minister, the payments are intended to protect workers’ pension entitlements, support the sustainability of Ghana’s pension system and ensure the government meets its financial commitments.

The announcement follows an earlier disclosure that the government had released GH¢24.8 billion to statutory funds since January 2026 to support key sectors, including education, healthcare, road infrastructure and local development.

Dr Forson said the timely release of statutory funds was aimed at ensuring that public institutions had the financial resources needed to provide essential services to Ghanaians.

SSNIT administers Ghana’s compulsory first-tier pension scheme, which provides retirement income and other social security benefits to eligible workers and their dependants. The Second-Tier pension scheme provides additional occupational retirement benefits alongside the basic national social security system.

The settlement of pension obligations is important for maintaining confidence in Ghana’s pension industry and ensuring that pension funds can meet their long-term commitments to contributors and retirees.
