Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that the government is taking steps to revive Ghana Airways by 2027, nearly three decades after the former national airline ceased operations.
According to the minister, plans are underway to restore Ghana’s national carrier as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s aviation industry and improve international air connectivity.
Ablakwa disclosed the development during an engagement with Ghanaians living in Canada, where he highlighted the government’s commitment to bringing back the state-owned airline.
The proposed relaunch of Ghana Airways could mark a significant development for Ghana’s aviation sector, potentially creating employment opportunities, supporting tourism and trade, and improving air travel connections between Ghana and other international destinations.
However, further details regarding the airline’s operational plans, investment requirements, fleet, and official relaunch arrangements are yet to be provided in the announcement.
The proposed revival comes amid renewed interest in establishing a sustainable national airline capable of supporting Ghana’s economic development and strengthening its position as an aviation hub in West Africa.
