UK-based agrifood investment firm Agrium Capital has signed a new agreement with Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme (24H+) to advance a $270 million investment aimed at transforming the country’s poultry industry.

The agreement was signed in London on Thursday, October 22, 2026, following an earlier Heads of Terms agreement concluded on August 22. The latest deal moves the proposed investment into the next phase of technical preparation and project development.

The partnership includes Petra Trust, Axis Pension Trust and Ghana EXIM Bank, combining international private investment with Ghanaian institutional financing to expand domestic poultry production.

Ghana Poultry Project Targets 12,000 Jobs

The proposed poultry investment is expected to create 12,000 direct jobs, improve food security and reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported chicken and other poultry products.

Ghana spends an estimated $400 million annually on poultry imports. The project aims to reduce this expenditure by strengthening local production, processing and distribution capacity.

The first phase is expected to produce 20,000 tonnes of dressed and processed broiler products annually, with the potential to increase output to 50,000 tonnes.

The integrated project will cover the entire poultry value chain, including animal feed production, breeding, hatchery operations, broiler farming, processing, cold storage, logistics and market access.

24-Hour Economy Programme Attracts Private Investment

Presidential Adviser on the 24H+ Programme, Augustus Goosie Tanoh, said the agreement reflects the government’s commitment to mobilising domestic and international private capital to develop productive sectors of Ghana’s economy.

He explained that the addendum strengthens the partnership and advances the technical and financial preparations needed to turn the investment framework into a commercially viable poultry industry.

Agrium Capital, a subsidiary of Asset Green Ltd, will work with the Ghanaian financial institutions to support the development of a large-scale poultry production system.

Petra Trust Managing Director Kofi D. Fynn said the participation of Petra Trust and Axis Pension Trust demonstrates the pension sector’s willingness to commit long-term capital to investments that support national economic development.

The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change has also played a supporting role in bringing together government representatives, international investors and domestic institutional financiers.

UK-Ghana Partnership to Strengthen Food Security

The investment has been welcomed as an opportunity to deepen UK-Ghana trade and economic cooperation while supporting agricultural industrialisation.

If successfully implemented, the poultry project could generate employment, create opportunities for local farmers and agribusinesses, expand food processing and reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported poultry products.

The initiative also supports the broader objectives of the 24-Hour Economy Programme, which seeks to increase domestic production, promote value addition, attract investment and accelerate economic growth.
