Benito Owusu-Bio, the chairman of the Appiatse Reconstruction Implementation Team and the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources in charge of Lands and Forestry, has warned contractors rebuilding the Appiatse township not to skimp on the quality of materials used in the project.

Although the team is attempting to fulfill predetermined goals and timelines, the deputy minister insisted that “if the work must be done, then it must be done well, so do not rush through it, take your time, and use quality materials to finish the work.”

On Saturday, May 27, 2023, Mr. Owusu-Bio and a few other members of the reconstruction implementation team conducted a working visit to Appiatse to, among other things, assess the status of the construction project.

After inspecting each of the site’s six lots, Mr. Owusu-Bio gave AESL, the project’s consultants, the urgent task of ensuring that exterior building work gets started right away. He also requested that they improve supervision methods, even if that means hiring a second supervisor to remain on the jobsite with the laborers at all times.

Additionally, he instructed the on-site Urban Roads team to make sure the drainage system being built concurrently with the main building work is done correctly to prevent flooding both during and after the full construction.

The Deputy Minister was pleased that overall, construction is moving forward gradually and that more buildings are getting roofs, but she hoped that even more will be finished soon.

In order to improve the overall appearance of the work, Mr. Charles Blankson-Hermans, a member of the ARIT Committee and the Ghana Institute of Architects, added his voice to the call for contractors to tidy up their projects and the construction site as they go along.

Mr. Walter Semordzie, the Site Manager with the Project Consultants, AESL, who also took the Deputy Minister on the inspection tour, provided the Deputy Minister with an update on the status of the project and gave him the assurance that all instructions will be taken into immediate consideration and implemented as soon as is practical.
