MLNR-PR UPDATES
Key stakeholders from the government, civil society, and health sectors came together on Monday, October 13, 2025, for a high-level edition of the British High Commission’s “Galamsey Speaker Series.”
The forum’s goal is to address the complex issues of illicit mining and create long-term solutions.
The Ministry’s Director of Communications, Ms. Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, gave the keynote message on behalf of Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.
The serious socioeconomic and environmental effects of galamsey were emphasised in her address, “The Impact, Causes, and the Five-Pronged Strategy in Addressing Illegal Mining in Ghana.”

“Illegal mining is not just an environmental concern; it is a national development challenge that undermines our water security, public health, and social stability,” Ms. Ama Mawusi stated.
She described the government’s multifaceted approach to countering the threat, emphasising:
- Promoting Stakeholder Education and Collaboration.
- Implementing Regulatory Reforms.
- Strengthening Law Enforcement.
- Reclaiming Degraded Lands and Restoring Polluted Water Bodies.
- Providing Alternative and Sustainable Livelihoods.
Following that, there was a panel discussion with representatives from the Office of the Presidency, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Ghana Coalition Against Illegal Mining, and the health sector.
The conversation covered the multifaceted effects of illicit mining, including deforestation and mercury pollution, among other grave outcomes.
In order to stop the practice, participants unanimously emphasised the need for strong public education and sensitisation efforts in addition to coordinated action across ministries and communities.
The British High Commission’s continued collaboration with Ghana, which aims to advance sustainable environmental practices and responsible resource management, includes the Galamsey Speaker Series.
