The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Sanitation Court, heard by Her Worship Mrs. Vera Aryeetey, has placed two people under police arrest after they dumped trash in Rawlings Park in Accra’s Central Business District (CBD).
Following their failure to post GH₵2,000 bail each, the accused, identified as Ibrahim Abdullah and Eric Opoku, were placed under detention and were scheduled to return to court on November 5, 2025.
The accused were arrested by AMA Public Health Officers on October 12, 2025, at 5 a.m., while disposing of trash in Rawlings Park, in flagrant violation of the Assembly’s sanitation bylaws, which forbid the careless disposal of waste in unapproved areas, according to prosecutor Nii Okine Aryee.
Speaking on the subject, Mr. Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the AMA’s Head of Public Affairs, stated that the Assembly would keep working with the cleanliness Court to bring charges against violators of the city’s cleanliness regulations.
He emphasised that the Assembly’s larger effort under the “Resetting Accra” agenda, which aims to ensure a cleaner and healthier metropolis and promote environmental discipline, included the continuing enforcement exercise.
“The AMA will not relent in its efforts to enforce the sanitation bye-laws. Those who continue to dump refuse indiscriminately will be arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others,” Mr. Ankrah said.
In addition, he asked citizens, business owners, and transportation providers in the central business district to embrace appropriate waste management techniques and back the Assembly’s initiatives to keep the area safe and clean for everybody.
