The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has elected Professor Ernest Yorke as its next President, following a closely contested internal election on Saturday, November 15, 2025.
Prof. Yorke won with 1,857 votes, which represented 53.6% of all valid ballots cast. He overcame his closest competitor, Dr. Justice Yankson, in a race monitored by health experts around the country.
Dr Rita Larsen-Reindorf, Chairperson of the GMA Electoral Committee, released the final results, describing the elections as free, fair, and transparent.
Prof. Yorke has years of expertise in medical leadership and is regarded as a reputable educator, physician, and health champion. He has held a number of important positions in the GMA in the past, including:
Junior Doctors’ Representative
Divisional Secretary
Divisional Vice Chair
Member of the GMA Council
His election is a continuation of his long-standing contributions to Ghanaian healthcare advocacy, professional welfare, and medical policy.
Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, has called on the recently elected GMA leadership to actively support the government’s revived health sector reforms.
The Minister underlined the value of cooperation between the government and medical professionals during his speech at the GMA’s 67th Annual Conference, which had as its theme “Strengthening Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) for Sustainable Healthcare Delivery.”
Mr. Akandoh described a number of ongoing programs designed to lessen persistent disparities in healthcare delivery and access. Among them are:
- Decentralised posting of doctors to reduce bottlenecks in staffing
- The rollout of the Free Primary Health Care policy
- The establishment of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund to strengthen healthcare financing and improve conditions for medical personnel
