President John Mahama says the government is taking serious steps to stabilise energy supplies throughout the country, including the installation of 2,500 new transformers to satisfy rising demand.

Speaking during an inspection at the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), he pointed out that many places have inconsistent supply because of the fast population increase and developing settlements that have outgrown the current power infrastructure.

President Mahama clarified that with a population of more than 33 million, Ghana’s electrification program, which started in the 1980s when the country’s population was between 18 and 19 million, is now under additional pressure.

He maintains that many transformers built decades ago, including one in Nungua that has been in operation for more than 20 years, are unable to handle the extra demand brought on by the city’s fast growth.

He said that power distributors have been failing to replace old transformers on a significant scale for years, which has led to ongoing variations in the delivery of electricity.

The government has purchased 2,500 transformers for statewide installation as part of a phased renovation in order to close this gap, with assistance from the Finance Ministry.

With plans to continuously replace outdated equipment across the nation, the President promised that after the new transformers are deployed, power stability will be greatly improved.

He said that the current outages are not “dumsor,” but rather necessary disruptions to make room for improvements that will guarantee a better and more dependable supply of electricity.

Additionally, President Mahama promised that any temporary shutdowns during installation construction would be properly communicated to the impacted people.

Additionally, he emphasised that a large number of the transformers are produced locally, which he claims will strengthen Ghana’s economy and promote regional business.

The President emphasised the need to enhance customer service in the electricity industry going forward.

In order to guarantee prompt resolution of issues and complaints, he suggested setting up effective call centers manned by young Ghanaians. He emphasised that efforts to stabilise the electricity supply must be complemented by better customer service.
