Ghana commemorated World AIDS Day 2025 amidst frightening new data revealing that more than 334,700 people are living with HIV, with over 15,200 new infections and 12,600 AIDS-related fatalities recorded in 2024.

The findings highlight the ongoing public health problem that the disease causes across the country.

In a statement issued on Monday, December 1, the government defined the day as a time for reflection, solidarity, and renewed commitment to an AIDS-free Ghana.

This year’s global theme, “Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response,” emphasizes the importance of robust health systems that can continue services in the face of shocks.

Ghana’s national sub-theme, “Africa Unites Against AIDS,” emphasizes regional cooperation and shared responsibility for citizens’ health.

To safeguard key services amid diminishing foreign funding, the administration announced strong actions. In February 2025, the President asked the Ministry of Finance to ensure funds for key HIV services.

In order to improve prevention, lessen stigma, and safeguard employees, the Cabinet also approved an updated National Workplace HIV and Wellness Policy.

In order to increase access to prevention and treatment, mobilize domestic resources, and foster long-term resilience, a National HIV Response Sustainability Roadmap was also introduced.

The statement noted that HIV continues to have an influence on economic growth and workforce productivity, emphasizing the critical role of the private sector.

Businesses have been asked to invest in workplace HIV programmes, support awareness campaigns, and create regulations that protect employees.

The government urged people to do self-tests, seek treatment as soon as possible, and actively combat stigma and discrimination. It also praised governmental, private, and civil society stakeholders for their dedication and creative efforts in the battle against HIV.
