Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, has defended the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s economic management, arguing that despite persistent worries about income shortfalls, spending is still reasonable.
His remarks coincide with a heated public discussion about government spending and budgetary restraint, with detractors, especially those from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), arguing that the government is underspending.
In an interview with Channel One’s Face to Face on Tuesday, December 9, Kwakye Ofosu contrasted how the present administration and the previous NPP government handled budgetary constraints.
He maintained that while revenue shortages were a problem for both regimes, the current administration has handled more responsibly by modifying its spending.
“It is not true [that we don’t spend]. We are spending, but we are being fiscally prudent. When you read the budget again, the Finance Minister indicated that they had some shortfall in revenue but he had corresponding cuts in expenditure.”
“So he comes within the limits that he had set for himself. Under the NPP, when there was a drop in revenue, they ballooned expenditure.”
